    Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) Channel

Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities is a documentary and interactive project that explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played in American history, culture, and national identity. Today, over half of all African American professionals are graduates of HBCUs. More than 50% of the nation's African American public school teachers and 70% of African American dentists earned degrees at HBCUs. The film brings to a broad national audience for the first time the story of HBCUs and the power of higher education to transform lives and advance civil rights and equality in the face of intolerance and injustice.

  • Signpost to Freedom: The 1953 BR Bus Boycott

    Monday Feb 19, 2018 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM

    Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) Channel

This program tells the story of the nation's first large-scale boycott challenging segregation. In 1953, led by a handful of determined young men and women, the African-American citizens of Louisiana's capital city staged a quiet revolt by refusing to ride city buses. In just eight days, they brought the city's bus system to the brink of bankruptcy. Word of the successful action spread like wildfire, influencing others like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. This is the true story of Marshall's greatest challenge in those early days: a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman, a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law. They defend the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell who is accused by his white female employer, Eleanor Strubing of sexual assault and attempted murder.
